CGP introduced this book in 2012 as one of a range of Verbal and Non-Verbal Practice books. I use this series of books to teach my students because the presentation style makes it easy for me to explain how to answer each question type. As with most of the non-CEM books, it is not exam specific, but it does cover all elements of the GL Assessment version of the 11 plus as well as other exam providers.
This book is divided in to 6 sections:
- The Alphabet
- Making Words
- Word Meanings
- Maths and Sequences
- Logic and Coding
- Assessment Tests
In common with all of the books in the Verbal Reasoning series, the first 5 sections offer 8-24 practice questions with a very simple example at the top of the page. The work is of the correct 11 plus level, certainly for the GL Assessment exam, in which I specialise, and it does seem that the later assessment tests are slightly more challenging than the exam itself. These types of practice books contain some questions that do not feature in the 11 plus exams, but the book does provide exam level practice for non-CEM candidates.
This is not a “learning guide” and does not offer full explanations of the answers that are conveniently included in a tear-out answer booklet inside the back cover. The lack of explanations supports CGP’s assertion that this is a Practice Book, and it is not recommend for use as an initial teaching & learning resource. (A parents’ guide, or learning guide is far more appropriate.)
This book is most useful to students who already understand the basic logic and questioning style of the 11 plus. It does reach or exceed the exam standards in every area and I recommend this book as the final practice before moving on to pure exam papers in the final phase of preparation.
